What size is a standard external front door?
There isn’t a standard door size in the UK, with installers and homeowners preferring to use a series of sizes.
For many years, 2’6” (30 inches or 762mm) has been the most common door width in England and Wales. While on the other hand, Scotland’s doors generally measure about 28.5 inches (726mm) and are therefore a bit narrower.
If you quiz an installer on what they regard as a ‘standard’ door, you will likely get differing answers between installers, as they cite a door as ‘standard’ based on their product line and fitting routine. County tailors each door sold, which enables us to negotiate non-standard openings.
Standard Internal Door Sizes For Most Uk Residences
As has long been the case, standard internal door sizes in the UK are measured in metric and imperial naming systems. Explained more clearly, a door stated to be “2 ft 6” in an older building or by a supplier, is 762 mm in metric terms.
Imperial sizes of 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are commonly used in England and Wales, but Scotland tends to measure in metric units, especially when 2040 mm tall doors are specified for newer dwellings.
The following table provides a rundown of common standard door sizes, with height and width given in imperial and metric units.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
Front and back doors in the UK come in a fairly consistent group of standard sizes. The most popular external door dimensions commence at 1981 mm in height and generally have a width in the region of 610 mm to 926 mm.
These sizes invariably suit most traditional door openings, which will see that you don’t incur a problem carrying out a replacement door installation.
The 2040 mm tall series that we mentioned earlier is fondly admired in Scotland and harnessed at new-builds where a contemporary and lofty feel is desired. Our table is designed to outline where each size is typically employed.

Standard Door Sizes By Common Material
We must alert you to the fact that the choice of door material can influence height and width, as well as slab thickness.
44 mm to 56 mm is the normal size of timber doors, while composite doors typically measure 44 mm to 70 mm. Slimmer than both are UPVC door slabs.
They each demonstrate differing levels of security and insulation, and look very different appearance-wise too. Identify the full set of dissimilarities below and get a breakdown of common door sizes and materials.

You won’t need to do any measuring whatsoever, if you don’t want to or feel incapable of it, when you appoint County to orchestrate a door installation. Book an appointment to initiate this.
