How To Spot A Dishonest Window Seller - 4 Sales Tactics They Might Use

Price conditioning

When they know you’re completely unaware of their cost, a salesperson might try a tactic called ‘price conditioning’, claiming that the quote they give you is the best you’ll get anywhere, when they know that’s probably a lie.  

Fake discounts

Three quotes is the very least you should get when pricing up windows and doors, never settling for just one of them. 

If they’re the first company you’ve approached, a salesperson may create a fake discount that they insist you have to immediately accept to claim, in an attempt to stop you getting any more quotes elsewhere. 

Large price drop

To take you by surprise and shock you, a salesperson may quote a vastly inflated price, just to see what you say in response. 

If you express alarm, they’ll then agree to a huge price drop, designed to make you think you are getting a big discount that you will want to rip their arms off to get. This discount won’t be what it’s cracked up to be. 


You may be asked “what do you want to pay for new windows and doors?”. 

Any figure you give could be manipulated by the salesperson who will use it to work out a price, when you should possibly be paying a lot less than what they quote. 

You will be better positioned to state an accurate price when you have obtained a number of quotes.
