Is Planning Permission Necessary When Getting A Porch Fitted?

You’ve got to admit that it’s a joyful feeling when someone makes a kind remark about the look of your home.

Surely you’ve received one at some time? If you haven’t, maybe you need to give your entrance a lift, particularly as it’s so often the first thing that people see when they visit.

Getting a porch added to the front of the building would definitely enhance its appearance and attract positive attention.

When we install a porch for a customer, we always design it so the porch matches the existing styling of their home and doesn’t look out of place.

It will give you an extra space for storage, somewhere you can despot shoes, umbrellas, coats etc. freeing up room in other parts of the house.

The security of your home will also be enhanced by its presence, with it made using resilient materials and including a multi-point lock, along with various other secure components.

But, first things first. You’ve got to find out if planning permission will be necessary for the porch.

It won’t if the porch meets the criteria to enjoy Permitted Development Rights, which is as follows:

  • its footprint (the total floor area it takes up) is no greater than 3 square metres
  • there’s at least 2 metres between the edge of the porch and any boundary facing a road
  • it isn’t taller than 3 metres
  • it isn’t within a conservation area

You can get confirmation about whether planning permission is or isn’t needed from your local authority. County can always see to this on your behalf if we are given responsibility for the job.

If a planning application must be submitted, again, we will assist and help out with the submission of the relevant paperwork.
